Lower Back Pain Treatment Cambridge

How can  Chiropractor  Help you if you live in Cambridge ?

Before I begin, let me give you a little insight to where my perspective on the healing comes from. By training, I’m a scientist. I am really good at looking at issues critically and deciphering facts and problems based on factual evidence and sound theories. At the same time, I always had an interest in alternative medicine and while I lived in Seattle for 5 years, I had the chance to experience directly and learn various healing modalities such as naturopathic physician care,  acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic in Cambridge.

Back Surgery

Some of my knowledge comes from being the inquisitive patient, some comes from discussions with students of Bastyr College of Naturopathic medicine who I befriended while in Seattle.  While in Cambridge I also took several classes on Reiki, and became a Reiki Master/Teacher and hence I have the insiders perspective on how energy healing works and what it can and can’t do.I am a strong advocate of alternative therapies in conjunction with or sometimes instead of traditional medicine. However, recently, I have been really bothered by practices of chiropractor (some not all) and I feel that there are many out there that take advantage of the general lack of understanding of how the human body works in patients to keep their businesses going.

Pain In Neck Chiropractors are health care professionals who prevent and treat spinal injuries. The main principle of chiropractic is to maintain the coordination between the brain and the nervous system, where the functions of the body are sent through the spinal cord and the vertebrae. One of the most prominent procedures performed by this branch of health care is joint manipulation or more commonly termed "joint adjustment." Though it is a popular procedure for chiropractors, it is argued to have no long-term effects compared to the use of other methods of treatments. The American Medical Association (AMA) did not recognize Chiropractic care for years. In fact, the practice has been referred to as "the committee of quackery." Chiropractor critics often disagree with manipulation of the spinal cord as part of the methodology of the practice. They express a great concern about possible severe injuries caused by this manipulation, especially the rotary cervical or neck manipulation wherein a wrong twist has resulted in trauma, paralysis, strokes and death of the patient. Although many professionals in the medical field s still believe that the methods used by chiropractors are unscientific, chiropractic is growing in popularity. In fact, you see many chiropractors' offices in malls and in gyms. If you are a health conscious, the advice of a chiropractor will appeal to you, because they emphasize a healthy lifestyle, rather than relying on prescribed medicines or surgeries. Chiropractors use treatments that are considered alternative noninvasive health care practices, and treatments for the back, neck, joints and other extremities are more accepted by the public nowadays. What is Chiropractic Treatment?

Misunderstood a chiropractic doctor is probably one of the most misunderstood healthcare practitioners in the medical profession. Through the years they have been looked at askance by doubters who are full of suspicion. In times past, they have been called quacks, or worse. This is due, in part, to the public's narrow and limited view of medical treatment - being that solely of administering prescription drugs and performing surgery. It's unfortunate that the majority of people believe this is all there is to health care. There truth is there is more to health care than drugs and surgery! A great deal more! Sad to say, but even some chiropractic patients haven't a real clear understanding of what chiropractic is. And for those who have never been to a chiropractor, most are totally misinformed as to the make-up of the profession. The fact is chiropractic is the largest drug-free form of health care and the third largest form of any health care in North America. What is Chiropractic? The word "chiropractic" is a blending of the Greek words cheir (hand) and praxis (action) and means "done by hand." Chiropractic is an alternative medical system in that the practitioner takes a different approach from conventional medicine in diagnosing, classifying, and treating medical problems. Essentially, chiropractic focuses on the relationship between the body's structure - primarily that of the spine - and the body's function. Doctors of chiropractic use hands-on therapy called manipulation (or adjustment) as their core procedure. Comparable to an MD? So is the training of a chiropractor as rigorous as that of a medical doctor? The answer is a resounding, yes. Today's doctor of chiropractic receives an extensive educational background beginning with three years of pre-chiropractic study. From there they advance into a four-year course of study. A student of chiropractic spends as many hours in the study of human physiology as that of a medical doctor. Chiropractic programs require a minimum of 4,200 hours of combined classroom, laboratory, and clinical experience. The difference between the education of an MD and that of a chiropractor lies in the fact that an MD trains in pharmacology and surgical procedures and chiropractor trains in the care of the spine. Worth the Cost? Some will assert that it costs too much to go to the chiropractor. However, the opposite is true. The fact is that oftentimes when a person is treated by a chiropractic doctor for one certain symptom, the adjustments (treatments) result in a higher level of overall health and well-being. This leads to cutting back on prescription drugs, preventing the need for surgery, and slowing down the aging process. Those who benefit from chiropractic treatments look at it as an important part of their ongoing health maintenance, similar to that of regular exercise or visiting their local health spa. They now know the difference - how they felt before chiropractic treatments and how much better they feel now. A survey of patients of chiropractors in an independent physicians' association found that, when asked if they would recommend their Doctor of Chiropractic to others, 95.5% of the patients said "yes." 1A chiropractor is a whole health practitioner who is concerned not just about your symptoms, but your overall state of well-being. What your doctor of chiropractic can offer, no other doctor can. Have no doubt that a chiropractor is well trained to assist you reach your own personal optimal health. Cervical Stenosis

Can a Chiropractor Help People With Lower Back Pain?

I play a lot of hockey and have a bad back and have had foot pain for a number of years now and after much thought, I decided to go to a local chiropractor to get some relief. I had talked to a neighbor who told me he had a bad back as well and used a chiropractor on a regular basis. He recommended his chiropractor and I setup an appointment for an initial visit where they run some tests and determine what type of treatment you will need. The cost of my initial visit was $50 and the initial visit was about an hour in length. When treatment started, my first treatment was initially a little scary as I had never had my back cracked or manipulated before. You see, you lay on a table and the chiropractor puts pressure on your spine with a quick movement causing your back to make a popping noise, which the chiropractor said was a type of gas that your body produces and the sudden popping noise is harmless. Of course I signed the waiver you get when you first sign up to get treatment allowing them no legal responsibility should you suffer any problems or side effects. When my chiropractor was finished with the treatment, he put some ice cold gel, which is an anti-inflammatory on my back and if felt great after each treatment. I now use the anti-inflammatory all the time when my back gets a little sore from too much hockey or physical activity. I ended up going to the chiropractor for about 15 treatments and felt a great deal of relief from the chiropractic appointments. After each visit you feel so much better as the manipulation relieves tension in the body. The doctor also helped me with some stretching exercises for my back and showed me how to maintain my posture and keep good back health by even stretching a certain way while driving my car which was bothering me as well. He also suggested buying some ankle weights to help build strength for some meniscus pain I was having in my right knee as well which also helped a great deal. Overall I had a great experience with my local chiropractor and will use them again if I have future problems. Back Pain Treatment

Can a Chiropractic help with Treatment of Sciatica?

Hip pain is a common problem that can be the result of injury. In addition, it can be caused by tendonitis or inflammation of the tendons. It may be due to bursitis or inflammation of the fluid that is present around the joints. Muscle strain can also be a cause of this problem. Whatever the reason, hip pain is definitely not a pleasant experience. The discomfort can range from mild to severe. Pain often radiates into other parts of the body including the thigh. The hip is a ball and socket joint - the largest in the body - and when pain is experienced in this area it can make simple daily activities nearly impossible. This joint is where the thigh and the pelvis connect. Hip pain can be the result of an injury and can develop suddenly. In other instances, the problem may manifest slowly as the result of problems with the pelvis or lower back. Chiropractors check and treat the hip joint when problems are experienced as well as the pelvic joints and the lower back. This method of healing is one of the oldest known to man. It is based on the theory that many health problems, including hip pain, are caused by the misalignment of bones in the spinal column. Hip pain is experienced by many people and often the pain is felt in other places as well as the hip. This can include the groin, the inside or outside of the hip joint, the buttocks and the thighs. This is what is confusing to people as they often do not know what exactly is the cause of their pain. The pain may worsen with activities such as walking or running. It can even cause the sufferer to limp. Using cold packs will often relieve the pain for a period of time. However, it is important to find the cause of the pain and treat it for the relief needed. Chiropractic treatment is a safe non-surgical way of finding this cause and treating it for relief from hip pain. Chiropractors can also recommend exercises that can help to strengthen muscles. The way you sit or sleep an also affect the hips and put stress on the joints. Activities that you may consider pleasurable and not particularly strenuous, such as bowling or golfing can actually strain the hip joints. It is best to stop these activities if you are experiencing hip pain until you find out the cause. The hips are essential to the movement of the body and when they hurt, it can affect many aspects of daily life. Hip and back pain are closely related and although there can be many causes the most common is a misalignment of the bones and joints of the pelvis. Seeking the professional expertise of a chiropractor is often a highly effective method of eliminating this pain. Allowing relief from hip pain without the need for drugs or surgery. Herniated Disk For example, a mechanistic chiropractor may treat low back pain by working to rehabilitate a sacroiliac joint and then release the client when the sacroiliac joint returns to normal, pain-free function. A holistic chiropractor will treat the client until subluxations (spinal misalignments causing nerve irritation) are fully resolved and then broaden their attention to include general subluxation correction in the entire spine in order to promote general wellness. Both approaches have real value. While imposing limits on treatment based on the limits of what peer-reviewed research can substantiate is important, holistic chiropractors acknowledge that progress in science occurs by pushing the limits of understanding and treating patients in ways that current best evidence may not fully support. The periphery of science is where progress is usually made - though it is also where quackery finds refuge.3. Are you injured or are you dysfunctional? In other words, did your pain come on suddenly from an injury or did it set in more slowly due to something you repeatedly do? Sudden pain usually means an injury occurred. Sometimes it is a car accident, or a fall, or a sports injury. These type of injuries may be what a certain type of chiropractor focuses on or even has certification and increased training in. In cases of these types of injuries you want a chiropractor who can confidently treat sprains and strains, who can differentiate different types of injuries, and who will recognize when an injury is too severe for them and is also diligent enough to see certain warning signs and refer you to other providers when necessary. Many holistic chiropractors, though not all, are prone to viewing the spine in terms of subluxations only and may therefore miss the subtle signs of a more severe injury that requires the expertise of a specially-trained chiropractor, an orthopedist or neurologist. Though not a firm rule, a more mechanistic chiropractor may be a safer bet when a painful injury is involved.4. What professional associations serve the chiropractic profession, and how can this help you find the right DC? There are two large national organizations that represent chiropractors: the ACA and the ICA. The ACA is the American Chiropractic Association and the ICA is the International Chiropractic Association. The ACA is more mechanistic and the ICA is more holistic. State associations are more varied, so it is difficult to discern much about a chiropractor from looking at his or her state association membership unless you look into the political or philosophical leanings of that organization - a lot of work for finding a chiropractor. To make things simple, know that many ICA chiropractors actually oppose the ACA, and vice versa, so you can glean more from their membership (or non-membership) in national organizations than you can from other things you might find on the website or online listings for a chiropractor. It's important to not read too much into this bit of information, though, and of course to consider that all people are multi-dimensional and may not fit into the dichotomy I am describing. Still, as part of a larger set of information to make a judgement, this can be helpful to consider.5. Should you consider their websites, reviews, and testimonials? And how important are personal referrals? You may find out soon enough that many chiropractors use one of a handful of companies to make their websites. This means that if you go to ten different chiropractor's websites you may see the same website over and over again with just a different DC's name on it. This means the content is unoriginal and you likely cannot learn much about the chiropractor from their website. This reduces the value of the website. Chiropractors would be better off by ditching the spinning 3D spines and instead putting actual content on their sites. These sites are loaded with content but very little, if any, of the information on the site is unique to that chiropractor. Even articles with bylines that include that chiropractor's name are probably not articles written by that actual chiropractor. Suspect intellectual laziness and dishonesty when any professional puts his name and credentials on an article he or she did not author. Arm Pain

How a Chiropractor Can Help You With

Chiropractic care has been used as a proven and effective alternative method of medical treatment for centuries. Primary care physicians are beginning to fully understand that chiropractic treatment can be a valuable tool in their patients' rehabilitation and in maintaining a healthy and pain-free (or as pain-free as possible). Physicians are suggesting to their patients that they try chiropractic treatment before resorting to more drastic or risky methods of treatment such as medication trial and error and surgery. Although chiropractic care is proven to be less evasive and poses less risk, it does have its own advantages and disadvantages which should be weighed carefully before choosing to proceed with this method of care. A chiropractor, or Doctor of Chiropractic, is different from a Doctor of Medicine. The chiropractor's goals are to "diagnose, treat, correct, and prevent neurological, skeletal, or soft tissue dysfunction by primarily employing manual and conservative therapies; the most frequent being spinal and other articular adjustments and manipulations". It is a science-based and holistic method of treatment that is far less evasive than traditional forms of medical care and rehabilitation. The focus is on getting the body working smoothly as a whole unit instead of just treating one symptom at a time. Due to chiropractic care being a holistic method of treatment, it is less risky than traditional treatments. Patients do not have to endure surgery, use medication to induce a comatose state to help the body relax to heal itself, or use medication on a long-term basis to control pain/symptoms. Chiropractic treatments realign the spine and joints which allows the body to naturally "reset" itself to obtain and maintain optimal health. To avoid further injury to current physical conditions and avoid any new injuries, it is paramount that you choose your chiropractor very carefully. He/she needs to be a licensed and highly qualified, highly skilled and experienced chiropractor. The first step is to research their professional Dr. of Chiropractic license and his/her professional background/profile. Inquire about how long they have been a chiropractor, research if there has been any complaints made against him/her, if they have any specialist licenses or awards, what services he/she is qualified to provide, and if their fees are reasonable (not inflated). If the chiropractor does not meet highly qualified standards then keep searching. An unlicensed chiropractor that has little or no experience or they are not highly qualified/skilled can do serious damage to your body. Often times this damage is irreversible and could possibly cause a patient to become paralyzed, permanently disabled or cause death (which is highly rare). There are numerous benefits to chiropractic treatment, but there are nine that are more prominent: improved circulation, reduction or elimination of lactic acid, oxygen and nutrients are easily delivered to the whole body, increased flexibility, elimination of (or drastically reduced) pain and soreness, faster recovery time, decreased frequency of muscle spasms, prevention of future injuries or further aggravation of a current condition, and feeling healthier and more relaxed/at ease (The Minneapolis Chiropractors). The downside to chiropractic care is that there are side-effects and problem areas that patients need to be aware of. Certain patients may not experience any side-effects until hours or days after their treatment. Some of the side-effects associated with chiropractic treatment are fatigue, pain in the area(s) of the chief complaint and headaches. Although rare, there are more serious side-effects such as: herniated disk(s), compression of the nerves in the lower portion (lumbar region) of the spine which can result in pain that is more intense than the original pain along with weakness, bowel problems and the possibility of a stroke. On the plus side, chiropractors will do a thorough exam to make sure you don't have any medical conditions that might worsen the current physical condition(s). There are also people that need specialized care such as the elderly, pregnant women, children and infants. This group is more physically vulnerable to injuries and need to have a chiropractor that specializes in patients that fit into this group. Overall, chiropractic treatment is less expensive than surgery or numerous medications. There is, however, a downside to the financial side of chiropractic care. Each chiropractic session runs anywhere from $25.00 to $100.00. The length of the session can last between five or ten minutes up to one hour. The frequency of visits needed to obtain optimal health ranges from two to four times per week. If you do the math, you can see that these sessions can quickly add up. Aside from the financial aspect, this method of treatment is "hit or miss". Some patients experience immediate relief. Then there are patients that, after numerous sessions and hundreds (even thousands) of dollars, experience no relief or improvement at all. The way to avoid further injury to current physical issues and/or avoid new injuries, is to choose your chiropractor very carefully. He/she needs to be a licensed highly qualified, skilled, and experienced chiropractor. You need to first research the chiropractor's professional Dr. of Chiropractic license to make sure they are legally able to provide treatment(s) in your state. Look at how long they have been a chiropractor, if there has been any complaints made against him/her, if they have any specialist licenses or awards, what services he/she is qualified to provide, and if their fees are reasonable (not inflated). If the chiropractor does not meet highly qualified standards, keep searching. An unlicensed chiropractor that is not experienced or highly qualified/skilled can do serious damage to your body. Often times this damage is irreversible and could possibly cause a patient to become paralyzed or (although rare) cause death. The above pros and cons of chiropractic care will help you make an educated decision on whether or not this method will be beneficial for you and your condition/injury. Choosing a chiropractor that meets your physical and mental needs takes time. Never allow yourself to be bullied or pressured into selecting a chiropractor. You need to another doctor that you feel comfortable with. You need to be able to effectively communicate with your chiropractor for optimal results. You are in charge of your body, so keep searching until you find a chiropractor that you have "professional doctor/patient chemistry" with. Talk with your primary physician about utilizing chiropractic services so you can start enjoying a pain-free life today. Chiropractic Pillow

What to Ask When First Visit to the Chiropractic Clinic?

Many people today are opting for natural healing. And one of the most popular natural healing methods is chiropractic. Chiropractors are trained to provide relief to their patients as fast as they possibly can. A reputable chiropractic practitioner will recommend the smallest number of treatments necessary to help prevent the patient's condition from recurring. If it is your first time to visit a chiropractic clinic, here are the steps that might help you.- Before a patient is treated, the chiropractor needs to conduct an interview with the patient. This may be done face to face or over the telephone. - During this interview, the chiropractor will discuss his philosophy and approach toward treatment. You will be asked to fill out forms which will provide the chiropractor with the information he needs to develop your treatment plan. The questions on the form will revolve around the details of your condition. Additionally, you may be asked to provide details about your family's and your own medical history, past and current treatments, and other existing conditions. - You will then undergo a chiropractic exam. The chiropractor will conduct a few general tests followed by other tests designed to evaluate your range of motion, muscle strength and tone, and neurological integrity. In some cases, the patient may be asked to undergo further chiropractic tests. Some patients may be asked to undergo diagnostic studies after the chiropractic exam. Diagnostic studies can sometimes aid in enabling the chiropractor to make a more accurate diagnosis. These may include x-rays, MRI, and other lab tests. - Combining the findings from the patient's history, chiropractic exam, and diagnostic studies, the chiropractor can then proceed to make a diagnosis. Once a diagnosis has been made, the chiropractor will explain his findings, whether chiropractic can help you, the treatment plan, and the length of the treatment process. Actual treatment may start during the first visit or the following visit. Although treatment plans are tailored to each individual patient, most plans include adjustment of the joints, soft tissue healing techniques, pain control, strengthening and stretching exercises, advice on proper posture and movement, and treatments like massage, cold/hot compress, and nutritional advice. Treatment plans for patients are often divided into two parts. The initial phase is centered on providing immediate pain relief and restoring normal functions. The second phase is long-term in nature and is geared toward enabling the patience to achieve a good measure of functional independence which, in turn, should lead to the complete restoration of the patient's ability to enjoy his normal routines. These are the basic steps you should remember when planning to visit a chiropractic clinic for the first time. Arm Pain
